The Fishbrain App - A must have for the modern angler?

By: Zach Wharton

If you’re anything like myself, you have your go to fishing spot. It’s the place you know exactly what tackle to use, where the fish are and everything else included in reeling in a great catch. Let’s be real candid for a moment, as great as the reliability of your favorite location can be, sometimes it can get stale and leave you wishing for a new spot that could hold your next personal best catch. Instead of searching for bodies of water on GPS or driving around aimlessly for a new location, I’d like to suggest something I’ve been trying out. It’s a mobile as well as browser based application called Fishbrain, that provides a wide range of tools to help you find your next spot and catch the fish you’re looking for.

I know what you must be thinking at this point. No way any fisherman is going to give up their favorite honey hole to everyone else on the internet. Truth is you would be surprised what people are willing to share. With over 11 million users, Fishbrain has plenty of user generated content that reveals great locations all throughout the Country. If you’re interested in hearing about what this tool can do for you, stay tuned as I go through some of the features that make this application worthwhile for every fisherman.

Locations

On the fishbrain app, once you allow location services or put in your zip code, you will be presented with a 3 dimensional map with locations in your area. Once you click on one you’re curious about, you can see the number of recorded catches there, as well as an overall rating for the body of water. If you scroll down you can see user uploaded reviews, and pictures of the catches other anglers have reeled in there. These photos also allow you to get a good idea on the lay of the land, and what kind of banks and vegetation you can expect there. There is a feature for placing personal waypoints that are only viewable by you, just in case you aren’t interested in sharing your favorite spot!

Species and Bait choice

Once you select one of the map locations, you can also see the most caught species there. This gives you a general idea of what kinds of fish you can expect to find there and in the frequency they are caught. If you want to share something you have caught, the fishbrain app can identify the species for you if you find yourself unsure. This will certainly help you chose your bait and tackle based on what you’re going after, but if you want to see what works in that area, they offer help on that as well. Fishbrain logs what each catch is caught on and shows the most popular baits being used. Personally I found this helpful when I saw that at a local spot the most common bass bait was surprisingly topwater frogs. This gave me a good idea the place had some heavy cover and plenty of vegetation on the surface and I came prepared for the afternoon of fishing.

Join a Community

One of the best parts of living in our digital age is the ability to connect with people you wouldn’t normally have the ability to. With 11 million users on Fishbrain, there is certainly someone there that you might want to follow, have a conversation with or even meet up for a day of fishing! They offer a social aspect to their application that you will be familiar with if you have used any other social media website. You can join local or nationwide groups, message other users and explore professional and amateur fisherman you might be interested in keeping up with. If this aspect doesn’t interest you, there is no need to use it and you can be totally anonymous, but its a feature I’d recommend trying out if you are looking to be involved in a fishing community.
