Fly Fishing for Smallmouth Bass - The Nolichucky River

By: Slab Dynasty

Part 2 of our recent mountain trip brought us to the Nolichucky River near the Tennessee border to chase some smallmouth bass on the fly. This is only our second-time fly fishing for smallmouth bass, and the fishing was less than stellar, but we learned so much from a certified smallmouth fishing guru, Terry. Terry had been a guide for decades on this river, targeting smallies on the fly with his hand-tied streamers. We learned his technique involved drifting large, dark flies downstream to imitate a hellgrammite, then stripping slowly upstream to imitate baitfish. And his superior knowledge showed he outfished us 6 fish to 2! Big thanks to Terry and our buddy Nate for showing us around the Nolichucky and the NC mountains this weekend. More smallmouth content coming soon!
